It’s a well-known fact that deafness can affect our furry friends in the US, with research indicating that approximately 5-10% of all dogs suffer from this condition. There are various reasons why a dog might lose its hearing ability, such as genetic predisposition or simply getting older. Interestingly, dogs with white fur and blue eyes are more susceptible to experiencing hereditary deafness due to a gene mutation affecting their cochleosaccular region. However, it’s important to note that deaf dogs can still be fantastic companions and exhibit just as much affection and liveliness as their normal-hearing counterparts.
Meet Blu, a lovable pit bull with striking blue eyes and a coat of pure white. Unfortunately, Blu is deaf and spends most of her days at the animal shelter all alone, without any visitors to keep her company.
Mark and Sean were incredibly lucky to come across two deaf dogs up for adoption in San Francisco via Family Dog Rescue. They ultimately decided on Blu, who had been residing at the shelter for a while. Upon meeting her, they were taken with her vivacious energy, and she quickly formed a bond with Sean. Blu’s previous owners had to move to a place where pit bulls weren’t allowed, which resulted in Blu being placed in a shelter for an extended period.
Blu had been by herself for quite some time, which made her feel a bit uneasy around her new dads. She didn’t know if they were going to keep her or take her back to the shelter. When they went to the beach together, which was just a few days after they adopted her, Blu was incredibly scared and trembling in the backseat. But Mark and Sean noticed that Blu’s demeanor started to change as she became more familiar with them, and they watched her personality bloom.
Blu has been a beloved member of the family for three years now, and she can’t get enough of car rides and affection. Mark and Sean have always shown her how much she means to them, and this has fostered a strong relationship between them. They communicate in ways that are unique to them, with Blu being able to tell where they’re headed just by watching Mark’s gestures or sniffing their feet as they stroll.
Sean beamed as he described his bond with Blu, his cherished dog, commenting that she’s his soulmate. He can effortlessly read her like an open book, detecting her mood swings and emotional state with just one glance. The two of them have their own unspoken language that enables them to communicate without making a sound. Mark and Sean have even devised specific hand signals that help Blu comprehend when she is acting properly or inappropriately. For instance, a gentle finger wagging indicates that she has performed admirably, while a serious expression on Sean’s face implies that she must calm down. To assist Blu in managing stress, they’ve collaborated with a trainer to teach her relaxation tricks like stretching. They form a fantastic duo that knows and cares for each other profoundly.
Blu’s deafness doesn’t hinder her daily routine or relationship with her new owners. According to Mark, the only impact it has on Blu is her inability to communicate with other dogs through subtle hints and signals that deaf dogs like Blu cannot grasp. Mark went on to explain that this was a common issue amongst deaf dogs he had previously owned.
Sean passionately declared that deaf dogs listen with their souls, which he finds absolutely fascinating. He expressed his love for these exceptional creatures and how he cannot imagine life without them. Sean also shared that their deaf dog, Blue, remains calm during holiday fireworks, unlike other dogs. It was truly heartwarming to witness Mark and Sean’s profound affection for Blue.
