Two dogs in Texas had to be treated for over a thousand porcupine quills after getting into a tussle with the spiky creature. Peggy Gamblin discovered her Australian Shepherd and Boston Terrier with the quills on Sunday morning. The dogs had encountered the porcupine at their home in Brown County. After being rushed to the animal clinic, staff worked for more than an hour and a half to remove the quills. Gamblin is monitoring the dogs’ recovery and has been advised to check them daily for any remaining quills that may have worked their way out under the skin.
Currently, both pooches are back at their residence, taking some rest. Although it may take approximately two weeks for all the quills to fall out, both dogs are expected to recuperate entirely. According to veterinarians, they regularly encounter comparable porcupine attacks, and as long as the pet is brought to the clinic early, they can expect a full recovery. Travis Allen, a Game Warden at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, points out that porcupines are active at night, and most individuals will never catch a glimpse of them. Moreover, he reveals that a solitary porcupine can possess up to 30,000 quills, which equates to roughly 100-150 perforations per square inch of bodily surface area.
