When Garfield was just five weeks old, he was found alone on the streets and brought to a shelter. He wasn’t in the best condition – he was skinny, covered in fleas, and had ear mites. Megyn Scott-Hintz, a kitten foster caregiver, saw him at the shelter and took him home. Despite being feral and unused to human interaction, Garfield surprisingly remained calm and relaxed around Megyn.
Garfield adjusted well to his new surroundings and formed a bond with Captain Pickles, Megan’s outdoor kitty. Despite being a bit wild, Pickles grew fond of Garfield and became his protector and friend. To everyone’s surprise, they would even snuggle together on the couch, a rare occurrence for Pickles. Although Megan had taken care of many kittens before, it was clear that Garfield had a unique quality that won over Pickles.
Almost a decade ago, Megan took it upon herself to care for Pickles. From his ear being tipped, she could tell that he had been neutered before – something usual for cats living in groups. Megan tried hard to make him an indoor cat but Pickles preferred to spend most of his time hanging out on her porch and only entering the house during mealtime.
Garfield had some health issues that needed urgent attention, and he was taken to the vet for treatment. After a short stay at the clinic, Garfield was discharged and went back home. Pickles, his friend, was overjoyed to see him again and immediately began cleaning him up. Despite Megan’s attempts to stop Pickles from grooming Garfield, he refused to listen and kept at it. Pickles seemed to understand that Garfield needed extra care during his recovery, and he provided constant companionship.
Fortunately, Garfield made a quick recovery because of his strong constitution. Pickles continued to stay close to Garfield even after he regained his health, although he was more relaxed than before and did not feel the need to guard him as closely.
Following Garfield’s recuperation, Megan noticed an increase in his involvement with Pickles’ grooming. It seemed as though Pickles was instructing Garfield on the proper ways of feline behavior. Megan believes that all the positive experiences Garfield had while staying with her will help him find a new home. Additionally, she is delighted to witness that Captain Pickles has finally taken to being an indoor cat.
