The feline pair known as Artemis and Apollo, who live with their owners Reka and Peter in London, have gained huge popularity on Instagram with an impressive 117,000 followers. In 2018, they released their first book which detailed their charming lives and adventures, as well as an adorable calendar. They even undertook a picturesque journey across Scotland, laying the groundwork for their upcoming book. With exciting opportunities and public appearances already lined up, the dynamic duo is set to take 2019 by storm! Reka says, “I believe they have big plans to conquer the world. Personally, I aim to help them complete their Scottish adventure book, which features stunning images and tells the story of Artemis and Apollo’s quest for the mythical ‘sacred catnip’. It’s a thrilling treasure hunt that includes both mystical and humorous elements.”
We’re eagerly anticipating our upcoming trip to Scotland this summer, having learned from our previous mistakes and aiming to capture even more breathtaking photos. If all goes well, I’m hoping to extend this into a series, focusing on Wales, Ireland, and England. While I currently own two cats, Artemis and Apollo, I was raised with dogs and had a cherished ferret named Clark Snow who remained my faithful companion for over eight years. Sadly, Clark passed away in 2014, devastating me. It was during this difficult time that I came across Jonesy, who is also known as the ‘O2 cat’ due to his stunning appearance as a Maine Coon featured in television campaigns. His striking looks immediately captivated me.
Reka shared her admiration for Maine Coons because of their exceptional size and appearance, particularly their remarkable facial features and distinctive ear tufts. Her preference leaned towards feline companions that are more interactive than aloof, which is why she welcomed Artemis and Apollo into her home to keep each other company while she’s away. Although they don’t always see eye to eye, these cats usually maintain a harmonious relationship with each other.
Meet Artemis and Apollo, two feline brothers named after the Greek gods of the moon and sun. These furry friends were fostered by their owner, Reka, with Artemis being the first to arrive a month before Apollo. It took them three days to adjust to each other, but Artemis quickly took on the role of big sister, teaching Apollo how to use the litter box and groom himself. Despite occasional rough play, the two are inseparable. Whether it’s a trip to the vet or a “meow forward” job, they always accompany each other. And while people find it amusing to see them together, it actually helps them relax and stay calm. As for their Instagram fame? Well, that’s a story yet to be told.
Reka’s idea to create a joint Instagram account for their cats was initially just for fun. However, they were pleasantly surprised at how quickly the number of followers grew. Within a year, Artemis and Apollo had gained a following of 80,000 and have continued to steadily grow since then. But, for Reka, the most important thing is not the numbers, but the warmth and support of their long-term followers who regularly like and comment on the photos. The cats bring joy and happiness to people’s lives, and it warms Reka’s heart to read comments from those who say that the photos have brightened their day or helped them through difficult times. Even though the cats are not trained, they have been role models for Reka ever since they were kittens and are always willing to help out in exchange for some tasty tuna treats. The only challenge is getting both cats to look in the same direction during photo shoots, but luckily, feather toys always come in handy for that.
Capturing photos of cats is an enjoyable pastime for me. I particularly enjoy outdoor photo shoots due to the natural lighting that accentuates their fur’s beautiful colors. Although my cat Artemis may appear ordinary in indoor photos, her coat’s blend of colors is striking in outdoor settings. Both Artemis and Apollo are well-behaved and don’t run away, making it easier for me to capture their candid moments.
Maine Coons are akin to wild cats, and I relish photographing them in adventurous environments. On one occasion, I posted a photo of Artemis claiming to have spotted a lynx in the wilderness, and some people bought it! The photo has become one of our most popular ones, and Artemis must feel proud of herself for being mistaken for a lynx.
Despite their busy schedules, cats are delightful companions. They enjoy following us around or seeking our attention. They also appreciate solitude, meditating and relaxing in secluded corners of our homes. Nonetheless, they can’t resist checking back on us, often sitting on our keyboards to show off their superior computer skills.
