Describing the bond he shares with Lionel Messi, Kun Aguero compared their relationship to that of an “old married couple”.
Following a victorious win at the 2022 World Cup alongside Argentina, Lionel Messi has been the talk of the town lately.
During the awards ceremony held at the Lusail Stadium, Messi had his close friend Sergio Aguero by his side, who assisted the 36-year-old player in recreating a glorious moment reminiscent of Maradona’s iconic 1986 triumph. This created a truly remarkable and unforgettable moment in the world of football, especially for Argentine football fans and the Messi-Aguero duo.
Messi, known as a football icon for both Barcelona and PSG, shares impressive accomplishments with Aguero, who also had a noteworthy career playing for Barcelona and Man City. From their early days in national youth teams to countless international competitions, they have formed an inseparable bond and have shared many moments together, both on and off the football field.
On the pitch, they exhibit a synchronicity that makes them an indistinguishable duo; off the field, they are as close as brothers. Despite their contrasting personalities, as described by Aguero himself, their nearly two-decade-long partnership has proven that they are never alone, standing by each other through both triumph and tragedy.
The two young boys first crossed paths when they were merely 16 or 17 years old. Kun Aguero fondly recalls their initial encounter, sharing that they happened to meet at a training camp for the national team. Aguero was part of the U16 squad, while the other boy was training with the U17 team for the Men’s championship in America.
During their time at the camp, Aguero, Lionel Messi, alongside Garay and Formica, all found themselves seated together at a table. Messi was seated opposite Aguero, prompting him to quietly inquire about his name. Messi responded with his first name, Lionel, and when Aguero enquired about his last name, Messi revealed it to be “Messi.” Aguero’s lack of recognition prompted the other two boys to express their surprise, exclaiming, “You don’t know who that is?”
Although their first meeting was brief, destiny had more in store for them. As their careers progressed and they both became prominent young talents, they inadvertently started following each other’s journeys through televised matches. Eventually, both of them received call-ups to the Argentina U20 youth team, as they were around the same age and bore a striking resemblance to one another. From that point onward, the two budding stars were roommates and began a friendship that would endure.
Despite having contrasting personalities, they always maintain a mutual respect for one another. In an interview with Diario Sport, Kun Aguero shared that he and Messi have completely different dispositions. Messi is known for being organized, responsible, and tidy, while Aguero admits to being messy and often running late. Their divergent traits often led to amusing and troublesome situations when they shared a room. However, despite these differences, Messi chose to remain in the same room as Aguero because of their strong bond and compatibility. He even jokingly referred to them as an “old married couple.” Like any friendship, their relationship has also faced challenges. Messi and Aguero have supported and comforted each other through the darkest and most difficult times in their lives, demonstrating the true strength of their friendship.
The dynamic duo on the Argentinian national team faced numerous challenges and triumphs side by side. Interestingly, prior to developing a strong bond with Messi, Aguero had a cherished friend named Emiliano Molina, who also happened to be his teammate at the Independiente Club. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when Emiliano was involved in a devastating car accident while Aguero was on tour in the Netherlands.
